You know...Lately, I think I've been going out of my mind.

For starters, I was a part of this roleplaying community, which I joined just to have a little bit of fun. I played Loz. He wore skirts and loved to shop. He was bisexual and had the strangest Louis Vuitton fetish. He was in love with Celes Chere (from FFVI), and he hated sugar. But those were just quirks. Generally? He was a jerk. He liked to break people's windows with baseball bats and he got mad at the slightest thing. He had a very nasty temper. He was very protective of his family, and he threatened the lives of more than a few other characters. Also, he was a whore. I mean a really big whore. I mean the kind of whore that sleeps with anything that moves. And I do mean anything. He was such a whore, he wasn't even bisexual. You couldn't classify him like that. He was just a bona fide slut. That's all there was to it.

I also played Elena. God I love her. She lived with Loz. At first she was shy, but you know, around all of these sexually active people (play along with me here) she developed her own sexual appetite and wound up...you know. Generally being the kind of girl people would consider a slut. But really? She was just a big flirt. She only slept with two people. She had a big mouth too, and a really cute ass for some reason. Shopping turned her on. So did blood, and Louis Vuitton shoes. And zombies. She had a zombie fetish. I seriously had a scene where she was chewing on one. But that is neither here nor there.

So. Judging from my portrayal of these two characters, you can tell that they weren't anywhere near canon - aside from Loz's temper, and Elena's big mouth. But you have to admit, those portrayals are amusing as hell. Unfortunately, I caught hell for it, because I wasn't "keeping them canon" in the roleplay. Ok. So what. I thought the entire point of a roleplay was to have fun, not play by invisible rules that only exist inside of other people's warped little minds. What I want to know is, how in the world do you keep two characters canon who barely had enough screen time between the two of them to fill a cap of toothpaste?

When are we going to stop fighting over how to portray these characters? Seriously. The sad fact of life is that nobody can keep these characters canon. No one. You are not Nomura, and you do not work for Square. You cannot keep these characters in character, because you didn't create them. So all of the stupidity about Aeris/Cloud being canon, or Cid/Vincent, or Tifa/Cloud, or Yazoo/Loz is really just that. Stupidity. It doesn't matter, because unless you're Nomura, or someone else who helped develop these characters, you can't prove, confirm or deny anything. Let people think what they will, and display these characters how they want to. If someone wants Yazoo to be a crossdressing slut only interested in men with a fetish for his own hair who uses gun oil as lube during sex, they have that right. If someone wants to scream from the top of the Andes mountain that Vincent is, in fact, a vampire, and he left Lucrecia for Cid, they have that right. But, at the same time, we have the right to disagree with it. No one said you had to like the way that these characters are portrayed by fans. In fandom, everything is done at the stretch of your own imagination. The only thing that matters is your own personal preferences and tastes, which is shaped by your own opinions. That is the beauty of opinions after all. They are just like assholes: everyone has one.

I am not dissing anyone who ranted here earlier, or anyone who is going to rant here later on. I came here to rant myself. My rant is simply that if you are allowed your opinion of these characters, if you are allowed to portray them how you want to portray them, then why in the world can't other people? Why is it OK for you to worship Cloud/Tifa but it's not OK for someone else to be totally against it? Why is it not OK for someone to come in and say this entire shipping business, or portrayal of characters in roleplays and fanfics is utterly and completely retarded? Why is it not OK to sit around and just point and laugh at how sad and pathetic this fandom has actually become?

You know what drove me to write this? I just left the nastiest debate with a KH/FFVII fan, a debate that she started and for the last hour and a half, I've been trying to wriggle out of by telling her that my portrayal of these characters doesn't really matter. It doesn't put bread on the table, it's not going to aide in the search for a cure for cancer, and it's sure as hell not going to sleep with you when you need to get some. But that's not the bad part. Guess how old she is? 32.

I just think the whole point of fandom is to have fun and possibly share your interests with other people who may or may not share the same veiws as you. But I dunno. That notion doesn't involve starting internet drama and making other people feel like absolute dirt over ink, paper and pixels, so we can't possibly use it.

Hm. Maybe I am the one with the problem.

On Sephiroth and Cloud's English dub. [25 Apr 2006|11:03pm]

[ mood | mildly offended ]

Hi, first time posting!

From what I've seen, I feel strongly that there is not enough emotion in Sephiroth's English dub. There is no sense of interaction between Sephiroth and Cloud, especially Sephiroth, whose voice itself is apt but sounds like he's talking to himself. Other than Sephiroth's greeting, there is no sense of acknowledgment to each other's shared past. When I brought this up, I received a comment saying that this is merely "a slash fangirl's delusion of non-existential pairings". What, excuse me? I've based my opinion on the fact that there had been so much trauma and history between Sephiroth and Cloud, surely, there would have been some amount of sentiment in their tones? Yet, their speech seems entirely technical.

I am of the personal belief that shipping wars are inherently demented, and tend to indulge in many OT3s or any and all pairings. Now, no skin off of my nose if people want to set themselves in a ring and go for the jugular because they disagree about pixel love; I've long since outgrown it myself, so I figure most people probably will in due time also. I conveniently ignore the fact that hardcore debaters are sometimes approaching their thirties. In my awesome fantasy world, they are all thirteen years old.

My issue is when people actually have an issue with the fact that I'm not "loyal" to one ship or that I haphazardly throw characters together. You say that like it's a bad thing? Yes, I do. I will pair Tifa with Aeris' rod if I want to. This is fandom, for fuck's sake. My ideals about love and companionship need not apply. I can respect anyone who can make a crack pairing work -- in many cases it's much harder to write an unusual pairing, and more of a challenge. As long as it's done well, who cares? The stick needs to be dislodged from your anus when you are actually morally offended by the notion that people can pair many different characters together. That people can like and support giant orgies if they want to. Yes, we can. And we will. And if all your poor eyes can tolerate is your one, true pairing and the thought of those characters in any other sort of relationship hurts your poor, tender soul, I really couldn't care less. I'll never understand it, especially in fandoms such as Final Fucking Fantasy where the the default relationships tend to come in threes, but whatever floats your boat. The moral outrage, though, when you discover that people sometimes like threesomes, foursomes, something different, both possibilities, all possibilities, is not very becoming. It makes you look like an uptight dickwad taking this shit far too seriously.

And while I'm here, I like what I've heard of the Advent Children dub so far because it reminds me of the awkward translation of FF7's original script. It's doofy in some parts. I like that. Sometimes things stay with us because they are particularly silly, or badly done, or don't make sense. Video game history is made because of classic examples of this. Embrace it. Love it. Or switch to subtitles and stop whining.

Japnse is always better! lol!11one1 [18 Apr 2006|02:10pm]

[ mood | annoyed ]

Okay, with some English clips of Advent Children out, I can't help but be really annoyed with a huge amount of people already going "OMG its terrible!!! I knew Japanese voices are better!!! Dub is teh devil's spawn!"

I admit that with what I heard so far I'm kind of "meh" (and after watching AC a dozen times, I'm not surprised). But still, thats what I thought with the RLC interview with some Tifa examples but when I actually played the game, she sounded much better and I loved it. :D

If its just their opinion on what they're hearing so far, then I wouldn't mind as much but some people are already expecting the whole thing to suck because its in the magical language of English with gasp! celebrities and the "fact" that Japanese will always sound better because its the "true intention" of the creators. Ughgfhlgg.

And I don't know how people are under the impression that actors/actresses (particularly famous ones) can't do voice acting. Believe it or not, someone even suggested that they just pick someone off the street believing they would do better.

And personally, I don't see whats wrong with the fact that they haven't played the game therefore not being able to get in the "skin" of the characters.

It's the song that never ends. [28 Feb 2006|01:07am]

[ mood | sad ]

Oh, rants for final fantasy vii! ... Though the last one's over a month old, I can't help it. I can't. It's probably vanity because I usually just rant in my journal, which is why I will be playing broken record as far as icemilk is concerned.

However.

I really want to like Reno's characterization in FFVII:AC. I try. But every time I come close to warming up to it, I read something that makes me want to claw out my eyes and chuck them at (mostly new) fangirls. There I was, warming, warming, warming, and as I browsed deviantart instead of doing work, I read beneath a very nice picture:

"reno. lol, he is so dumb in ac, but he's cute so i love him anyway."

I paraphrase.

Please don't mind the blood-curdling scream of rage. I guess I'm a fangirl. I get real paranoid about getting characters right, in writing them for RP or otherwise. But AC, and the new fangirls carrying away certain assumptions, drives me crazy. I'm biased, I guess. I am biased toward thinking that Reno is a smart cookie.

Maybe it's because he's been a Turk for nearly a decade. Or because I don't believe Reno, who did not talk too much in-game (that would be Elena who uh, probably would also have learned better in two years), except for the suspicious sub incident, would be silly enough to tell Cloud they intended to rebuild ShinRa when that was the last thing Cloud would care for. Or he would be clumsy enough to get himself locked outside, given his near-complete control in all situations in-game-- he was able to run away, right?

I understand that there needed to be ways to balance Cloud's angst, and it was genuinely funny. But I can't help it. I don't think it makes sense, sometimes, with Reno in game, who while egotistical and lazy at times, wasn't a dumb-butt and was not a lush because the other Turks were always with him in the damn bar. ..But that's another rant entirely.

And comments like that drive. me. insane. :( He's not stupid. I promise. He'd be dead if he were. For srs. And I guess I'm a FFVII snob, because while I want to be happy the fandom is getting bigger and kicked back into active life, some of the AC-only folk, well. .. .. please play the game. It's fun. Honestly.

Edit Reno in-game? Kind of not pretty. Kind of freakily thin and creepy, and maybe I wouldn't walk on the same side of the street as this guy. I mean, I get that he's slouching. But look at how his abdomen caves in: Here. Maybe attractive in an eery way, oh my god EAT SOMETHING way. His face looks skeletal and his collarbones are popping. He is NOT a bishounen, and screw you AC, for making him one.

A note to the angry:

Using the word "fuxx" repeatedly in your rants does not make people listen to you. It makes them think you're stupid.

Trying over and over to convince the world that Cloti/Cleris/Clophiroth is canon does not make you revolutionary, it makes you look stupid.

All right, now that thats off my chest...

I ship Lozoo. I've shipped it since I first saw Advent Children, and I feel that I will continue to ship it until I stop liking FF7. In other words, this isn't going to change. I don't ship it loudly or vehemently, but it happens to be my Advent Children OTP.

This, obviously, means I like slash. However, unlike a good portion of fangirls, I do not "get off" on seeing guys together. To be told that I am a pervert getting hot over pixels is more than a little offensive. You're entitled to your opinion, by all means, but likewise I am entitled to mine. Please stop bashing my OTP just because you feel like it. I don't bash Cloti, please don't bash Lozoo or Clophiroth.

Or yaoi in general. Don't like? Don't read. We all know this, we all read it daily. Please take the advice!

FF7 cameos vs. KH main characters [28 Dec 2005|10:24pm]

Attention: Sora and Kairi are NOT duplicates of the couple CloudxTifa or CloudxAeris.

Stop acting like they are. Stop acting like just because Kairi wears pink she is Aeris, or just because she has a hair style that looks slightly like Tifa's she is either of these girls. Sora is not automatically Cloud because he has spikey hair. And I swear, if I hear one more, "Sora looks like the child of CloudxAeris/Tifa!" my head is going to explode.

KH is Sora and Kairi's story. Stop acting like FF7 cameos are more important than the main characters.

Pairings. Bah. [24 Dec 2005|02:20pm]

You are not your job sphere.
You are not how many materia you have mastered.
You are not the chocobos you breed.
You are not the contents of your mako tank.
You are not your fucking pairing.

The world is not made up of "Cloti" vs "Cleris". We as fans are more than the sum of our pairings... or at least I'd like to think we are. I like a LOT of pairings. I also like friendships, and rivalries, and internal thought monologues that have nothing to do with other people. I am not alone. I am not a "HoLu" or a "HoVin" or a "BarTi" or whatever. I am a person, a fan of Final Fantasy Seven. The GAME, not the sex-addled or sap-dripping fanfics.

There's this stuff in the game called plot and theory and non-sexual character interaction. I understand that this is difficult and shocking knowledge for people whose major exposure to human interaction stems from soap operas and sitcoms, but I assure you that it is true and it makes it much easier to interact with people around you who may not exist to have wild and crazy PWP sex with you.

Cloti fans burn me up. [23 Dec 2005|03:26am]

cherrypop
This is targeted only towards Cloti fans.

Rabid Cloti fans who do nothing but sit on their ass 24/7 and email-spam, livejournal-spam, and indiviually target people on their Cleris-bashing message board.

The first Cloti who sees this will probably think how wrong it is of me to not say anything about Clerises. Ok, that's fair. Find me a Cloti who has been spammed and bashed by a Cleris, find me a Cloti-bashing message board, and I'll agree with you.

But right now, it's only Cloti fans, and it's getting ridiculous.

I BARELY post on ACF now and I hardly post on the Cloud x Aerith message boards, and I have what's known as a L-I-F-E. Life. It's where you go outside and do things? It's where your fingers are (for once!) not touching a keyboard? It's where you actually, physically talk with people in the flesh and not behind a screen? You might wanna try it sometime. It might actually do you some good. And I like FFVII for other reasons than just Cloud and Aeris's relationship. These people seem to think FFVII is composed of only one aspect--the love triangle, and apparantly if you don't accept Cloud and Tifa's relationship as one of romance, you are a jew that needs to be thrown into a furnace.

This is REALLY really getting ridiculous. tnemes_forest. I don't mean to target anyone in particular, but I have yet to come across a "[Cloti here] is love" slogan.

I don't have a problem with people liking Cloud and Tifa as a couple (otherwise I'd have a problem with myself). I have a problem with people spamming me for liking Cloud and Aeris. If you don't agree with us, fine. It's not like we're gonna lose sleep over some 14 year old Cloti disagreeing with us. But there comes a point where it gets retarded, and it has gone past that point and is now just unbelieveable. Anastar doesn't deserve it. FF_Goddess doesn't deserve it. Others don't deserve it. They're people, not just interweb enemies you slap a "Cleris" sticker on.

...Lucrecia. "Chu" is the WRONG word. [13 Dec 2005|04:36pm]

yesthatnagia
Dear Other Vincent/Yuffie Writers:

If you are going to write Yuffie, please PLEASE take her more seriously. She's a ninja, okay? She turned 19 just before DC (assuming DC takes place in December...). She's not STUPID, she loves Wutai, and she's far, far blunter than most people are going to like.

And you know what? That's okay. No, really. It is.

And you know what else? Yuffie, unlike Tifa or Aeris or Cloud or Sephiroth* or your Mary-Sue, is NOT going to tolerate Vincent being all "chuuuuuuuu~" about Lucrecia. She's going to put her foot down and say, "Stop living in the past. That Luke-woman is DEAD, and she is NOT WORTH THE ANGST."

And you know what?

Yuffie is right.

If I wanted to, I could trace the events of the entire game back to Lucrecia. Gast may have discovered Jenova, but it was LUCRECIA who let things fuck up.

Sure, she thought she was doing the right thing.

Doesn't make it okay to expiriment on somebody who can't consent.

Doesn't make it smart to string along a guy who is paid to be a vicious, ruthless, sociopathic killer.

Doesn't make it okay to stand there and KNOW that the Turk and your husband/lover/boyfriend/boss/father-of-your-child aren't getting along, and it's because of you. She could have and SHOULD HAVE taken initiative and had our favourite little gun-toting sociopath transferred.

That's right, kiddies. Vincent is a badass. Sure, he has a tendency towards self-flagellation and negative introspection.

He's also a badass.

He hates himself, and he's got reasons.

1. He killed the child of the woman he loved. If you're fucking PSYCHO and claiming that Sephiroth was his son, then Vincent KILLED HIS OWN SON. Or at least THINKS he did.

2. He was PAID to be a vicious, ruthless, SOCIOPATHIC KILLER.

3. Was stalkerish and creepy and pushed a young female scientist over the edge. He was probably a contributing factor in her staying with Hojo. I can almost guarantee you that Lucrecia was physically afraid of Vincent, and that was wise, because he was a PAID RUTHLESS HITMAN.**

Vincent is fucked in the head. He is not a REMORSELESS killer, but he IS a killer. He is probably very very sensitive about his left hand. He's got not one, not two, not three, but FOUR demons in his head. FOUR. And they hate him too.

Try and remember that the next time you want to write my OTP.

* - not that the canon characters are neccessarily goingn to be like that...
** - there is CANONICAL PROOF that Lucrecia chose Hojo partly because of Vincent. Vincent says, towards the end of the game, "I understand, now. She chose him to protect him. I understand, but..." ...PROTECT HOJO FROM WHO/WHAT, I WONDER? AND MAYBE DO YOU THINK VINCENT WAS IN DENIAL THAT SHE WAS AFRAID OF HIM?!

(sorry for the frothy ramblings...)

Dear FF7:AC badfic,

Dude people, The Three--or the SHM, the Remnants, whatever the hell you want to call them--are children. They are, at best, two years old. Really. It was explained that they were created after Sephiroth absorbed the Black Materia, therefore they have only been in existence from that point to where Advent Children came in. Two years. This is canon.

Please stop making them sex gods. PLEASE.

They might have fragments of Sephiroth's memories, but I doubt the ones they have are entirely based around his sexual prowess. Sure, maybe they're decent in bed. Hell, Kadaj--being the most Sephirothy of the lot--might be more than decent. HOWEVER, this brings up a NEW question: What are they doing claiming that their reason for being is to pleasure your Sue?

I feel ill.

Final Fantasy Question-slash-Rant [12 Dec 2005|11:37am]

xerne
Nobody says "But it's not canon that Lulu's child is Wakka's! Maybe she slept with Auron, we don't know, she could be lying!"

Nobody says "But it's not canon that Marlene is Dyne's daughter! Maybe Barret was having an affair with Dyne's wife and he didn't know!"

Nobody even says "But it's not canon that Squall is Laguna's son!" even though it really isn't actually literally said.

So why do I have to pull out Ultimania scans and footnotes to demonstrate that it is, in fact, canon when Hojo says that Sephiroth is his son? I mean yeah, Hojo's not OMGKAWAIISUUPAABISHI but neither is President Shinra and nobody questions Rufus's parentage. People look at me askance when I consider the mere noncanonical possibility that Hojo fathered Cloud. And yet I still get people complaining when I say that canonically, Hojo is Sephiroth's father.

Can you imagine if family court held to this standard of proof? "Your honor, I could not possibly be the father of that child because he is a protagonist and I am old." "Stunning evidence! I order you never be required to pay child support!"

-- Regarding the hubbub surrounding Yuffie's OMGWAYTOOSLUTTY outfit in DC...Collapse )

-- Tifa's not the type who'd fight while wearing a thong underneath her miniskirt. I think you're mistaking her for girls in fighting games who actually do do that kind of stuff -- but unlike them, Tifa has a characterization to think about. If you'd go by that instead of the fact that she wears a miniskirt, you'd see that she kind of has a little thing called modesty. She would not go around doing her style of martial arts in a g-string. I know this because in Ehrgeiz she wears either black or white granny panties depending on the outfit you give her.

PS: Tifa would also wear a bra. Chances are, she'd have to. I reckon she'd have a bit of a slouching problem if she was letting them swing freely (and besides, big boobs feel sort of icky when they go unrestrained).

Miss Lockheart [05 Dec 2005|10:14pm]

megalomaniageek
Yeah, I wrote the last rant too, but this fandom sometimes just rubs me the wrong way twice in one week.

It's okay if you don't like Tifa. I may like her but it's a completely personal preference. Sometimes you just dislike people and/or characters, for any reason ranging from the seemingly nonexistant to the shallow to the fully rational. You may hate Tifa with all of your heart and think she unfairly stole Cloud from Aeris.
However, I want to make a few things clear. Firstly, simply, shortly: Tifa didn't/doesn't hate Aeris. She may feel jealous, and they may not be ZOMG BEST FRIENDS EVAR! but Tifa was sad when Aeris died and certainly didn't plan for/want it to happen. Secondly, I would like to address those who complain that Tifa decieved Cloud.
Yes, she did. However, try to imagine yourself in her shoes. Your best friend, whom you knew as a kid and have (had?) a crush on has returned and he's acting kind of weird. He, and I quote her about him, "remembers things that he shouldn't and doesn't remember things that he should." And you don't know what to do about it. Not only that, but then he tells a story in your presence to all of your friends about an event that he wasn't present for (but you were) and he recites it perfectly as if he was there (and apparently, he thinks he was). What do you do, interrupt him while he's telling this story and ask, "How do you know all of this? You weren't there!" MAYBE if you were alone with him it'd be fine, but he's telling this to the people that he is *leading.* The people putting their trust in him. It would make him and/or you look quite insane, and you're not even quite sure of what's going on.
Tifa is human and was placed in a very confusing and scary situation. Maybe she didn't take the best course of action, but she did what she thought was best for her and Cloud (and for all we know, he might have freaked out and gone to the Dark Side if he found out too early when his brain was still Jenova-controlled and unstable). Tifa even helped Cloud realize the truth later, when she got the chance and the courage to do so.

So like I said, hate her if you want to. All I ask is that you fully consider her situation before making an excuse like, "She lied to him."

*sigh* [01 Dec 2005|03:33am]

megalomaniageek
Okay, I want to start off saying that I LOVED Advent Children. A lot. I like the sequels, and I'm like a junkie who needs a fix when it comes to waiting for Dirge of Cerberus and Crisis Core.
That being said, I want to rant about something that has been steadily annoying me more lately: the people who write FFVII fanfiction, haven't played the game, and have only seen Advent Children (especially those who don't even go looking for game plot synopses and scripts and such things online). Actually, it's more like a rant *at* them.
Honestly, as much as I loved it, I do not understand how somebody could become an FFVII fan by ONLY seeing Advent Children (I just accept it because it has happened so much), because while there *was* plot, there wasn't that much and I doubt it'd be very clear to anybody not already familiar with the game.
Now *I don't have a problem with people becoming FFVII fans through Advent Children,* (in fact I want to hug most of you who have decided to play the game after seeing the movie) but if you loved the movie, wouldn't you *want* more? Wouldn't you *want* to understand where these characters came from? ESPECIALLY if you are going to write FFVII fanfiction and post it in the 'Game' section on Fanfiction.net? This isn't a movie-verse vs. game-verse type of thing either; the movie is a direct sequel built on the game instead of an entirely separate entity (if they were entirely separate canons, I'd be much more forgiving).
If you got into the movie *only* for the pretty graphics and the cool fight scenes and not for the plot, the game will probably disappoint you, for it is the exact opposite. Compared to Advent Children, the graphics suck, and the fight scenes are turn-based. The plot, on the other hand, is like a rich tapestry.
Trust me when I tell you that you're missing out by not playing this game.
